France started their Women’s Six Nations campaign with a hard-fought 22-10 win over Italy at Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi in Parma.

Gabrielle Vernier, Carla Arbez and Caroline Boujard’s tries were added to by points off the tee from Pauline Bourdon and Jessy Tremouliere on Sunday.

Giada Franco and Alyssa D’Inca scored Italy‘s tries with Michela Sillari converting one of those as they improved on last year’s 39-6 defeat in Grenoble.

France now head to Ireland

Gaelle Mignot’s France side next play Ireland in Cork on Saturday, while Giovanni Ranieri’s Italy take on England at Franklin’s Gardens one day later.

France went into the break 15-7 ahead thanks to Vernier and Arbez’s scores, coming in the 24th and 33rd minute, with Bourdon kicking five points.

However, Italy hit back well and soon after the break, D’Inca scored to add to Franco’s opening try of the game, which made it a three-point game.

France though were able to keep their cool and Boujard’s well-taken try down the short side with six minutes to play secured the victory in Parma.
