As the inevitable “terrible things that happened in 2016” roundups hit the internet—and there were a lot to choose from—we’re focusing on the good, the chic, and the joyful. And somehow, that much-needed dose of optimism this year came in the form of a bad-mouthed superhero in a bloody, red suit.

Ryan Reynolds was named Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainer of the Year for 2016, but really his superhero qualities translated off-screen as well as they did on. Yes, Deadpool was the best action movie we saw this year, and the reason has as much to do with his brain as it does his acting. “The humor, the tone, and the pathos came from Ryan in a very organic and almost unconscious way,” producer Simon Kinberg told EW.

But really, it’s the actor we see off-screen, the self-deprecating, curtain-pulling, myth-busting Reynolds that won over 2016. It’s safe to say that one gorgeous wife and two baby girls later, the proud dad is more comfortable in his voice than ever before, and the dry humor that resulted is exactly what we needed to hear.

“I hate to sound overly sentimental but I had a good year. I have great kids under 2, so that’s the kind of stuff you focus on,” he told EW. “The rest of the year they’re dead to me,” he added, always quick to cover up his heartfelt comments with a snippy comeback to remind us how utterly private his personal life really is.

On Twitter, the message is the same. “Ask your doctor if you qualify for an extension,” he told one soon-to-be father looking for parenting advice. “A 4th, possibly even 5th trimester can be very peaceful for the father.”

And our personal fave: “You’ve come to the right place, Dirk,” he said to a fan looking to keep his wife happy. “Celebrities are the gold standard for relationship advice.”

In a year full of surprises, Reynolds is keeping it real, in or out of his superhero suit.
