The English Half Marathon (or EHM, as it’s known in the local running community) is a fast-growing late summer 13.1 mile road race held in Warrington, Cheshire. Its 8th edition will be staged on Sunday, September 18. The event has more than tripled its participation figures over the past two years, and sold out in 2015. We took a closer look to find out what it is that every year in September makes this North-West town so magnetic to road runners of all abilities.

IDEAL LOCATION. Who doesn’t love a smooth transfer to the start on race morning? Located midway between Liverpool and Manchester, Warrington in easy reach via M6, M52 and M56 motorways and by train.

THE MEDALS – The guys at the EHM are the same behind the Rock ‘n’ Roll events in the UK and Ireland, so quite obsessed with medal design and quality. This year’s medals feature a spinning insert – you can see them in all their beauty here.

A FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE – Three distances (Half Marathon, 10K and mile) mean there’s something for everyone. The EHM is a perfect occasion for the family to share the pleasure of running – all soaked in classic northern warmth.

FAST, SCENIC RACECOURSE – The racecourse allows for PBs. With few tight turns, the profile shows an almost imperceptible climb until half-way, with a forgiving second half. Perfect for negative splits, and ideal stepping stone for the big autumn marathons. It’s quite scenic as well, with start and finish at the iconic Golden Gates and some top sights like the Old Market & the Halliwell Jones Stadium, home of Warrington Wolves (if you’re into rugby league that will give you goose bumps).

FINISH FESTIVAL – A rich music and cultural festival will be in full swing in Warrington on race weekend (click here for the festival website), so if you are around town before or after the race you’ll be thoroughly entertained.

Registrations are open and if you enter at www.run-ehm.com before June 30 you can save some money.
