L’Équipe reported in today’s edition that French football’s league body, the LFP, have begun to explore plans of creating a third professional football division called Ligue 3, to be formalised by 2020.

The initiative is being designed to ensure increased financial security for the sides playing in the National 1, the current 3rd tier division, which sees clubs that compete within it largely adopt amateur status, through TV rights deals.

Certain clubs in Ligue 2 are against the move, as it would likely take away a portion of the financial benefits that the French second division is seeing from their TV rights agreements as they currently stand.

The move would need to be completely finalised by 2020 when the new round of bidding for TV rights deals comes into effect.

Insiders believe that any eventual move in this direction would likely see clubs currently in the French 3rd division recoup an extra €1m per year.
