The 35-year-old stopper has signed a one-year contract with Le Racing after his two-year spell at Metz came to an end this summer, following the club’s relegation from Ligue 1.

Kawashima is a highly experienced goalkeeper, having collected 88 caps for his country and has played for a number of clubs across Europe and his home country, including Standard Liège, Dundee United, Lierse and Kawasaki Frontale.

The Samurai Blue stopper will compete with Matz Sels- Strasbourg’s €3.6m signing from Newcastle, as well as Bingourou Kamara for the number 1 spot.

Kawashima paid tribute to his new club upon the completion of the transfer. “I’m happy and proud to sign for Racing. They’re a historic club, the atmosphere at the Stade de la Meinau is extraordinary, and Strasbourg is a magnificent city which my family adores”.
