FAYETTE, Iowa – Southwest Minnesota State University wrestlers Cortez Arredondo and Andrew Petersen are both ranked among the Top 12 nationally in their respective weight classes in the first 2018-19 Division II Wrestling Coaches Association rankings presented by the United State Marine Corps.

The SMSU wrestling team also received nine votes for the team Top 25 preseason poll.

Arredondo, a senior from West. St. Paul, Minn., is ranked seventh at 157 pounds. A season ago, Arredondo was an NCAA national qualifier after finishing second at the NCAA Super Region Championships. He finished 1-2 at the NCAA Championships and closed the season with an overall record of 20-12. He has recorded back-to-back seasons with 20 or more victories.

Petersen, a junior from Moville, Iowa, is ranked 11th at heavyweight. He finished with an 18-11 record last season and just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships after a fifth-place finish at the Super Region Championships.

Southwest Minnesota State opens the 2018-19 season on Nov. 10 at the Dakota Wesleyan Open. SMSU’s first home dual match of the season is the conference opener Nov. 29 versus St. Cloud State.
