L’Équipe report tonight that Lyon midfielder Maxence Caqueret is set to sign a contract extension, with his current deal expiring at the end of next season.
The 22-year-old, who is currently out injured, was a priority for the team’s management. Caqueret himself did not want to leave in a year without his formative club receiving a transfer fee, while the club themselves did not want to sell him at any price this summer.
Lyon had offered him a €150,000 a month salary earlier in the season, which is nevertheless half of what the club’s highest earners receive. Talks then stalled as a result, despite a slightly improved offer several months later.
Negotiations resumed in the last few weeks, and Les Gones are now offering the midfielder four times his current salary along with a considerable signing-on fee to make up for what he would have earnt in the time since talks were opened.
There are still several details left to iron out – notably the length of the contract, which could run up to 2026 or 2027 – but Caqueret is now expected to put pen to paper on a new deal.
