FORT WAYNE, Ind — Highlighted by an upset over 16th ranked Indianapolis, the Maverick wrestling team finished 1-2 at the very competitive National Duals.

The Mavericks had some extremely tough competition on Friday, as they wrestled 5th ranked Notre Dame (OH), 16th ranked Indianapolis, and 3rd ranked Nebraska-Kearney all in the same day.

Its first test was against the Falcons of Notre Dame (OH), where Minnesota State came up short, falling by a final score of 27-9. The highlight of the dual was a huge upset for Matt Mincey (R-Sr., 157 lbs.) over the #1 ranked and defending national champion, Jonatan Rivera by a 6-3 decision. Mincey going into the match was ranked sixth in the nation.

The other two wrestlers who were victorious in the dual were Adam Cooling (Jr., 174 lbs.) and Malcolm Allen (R-Sr., 285 lbs.). Cooling also pulled an upset over fifth-ranked Justan Rivera by a 6-1 decision. Allen won by a 6-2 decision over Almonte Patrick. Scott VanDeLoo (Sr., 184 lbs.) suffered his first loss of the season against defending national champion Joey Davis by an 11-3 major decision.

In the first consolation round, the Mavericks would square off against the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds. Here, it would be a change in fortune as they defeated Indianapolis by a final score of 21-12 to complete the upset. Victorious for MSU was Daniel Close (Fr., 149 lbs.), Matt Mincey, Adam Cooling, Scott VanDeLoo, Darick Vancura (Jr., 197 lbs.) and Malcolm Allen. Most notable of the victories was a 16-1 tech fall victory for Mincey over Heath Lange and a 10-0 major decision victory for VanDeLoo over Taylor DeLong.

Minnesota State would see its tournament come to an end in the following round as they fell to third-ranked Nebraska-Kearney by a close score of 27-19. Matt Mincey continued his solid day with a win over another ranked opponent, this time seventh ranked Chase White by a 7-3 decision. Scott VanDeLoo and Malcolm Allen both picked up victories via fall in their final matches of the day. Daniel Close picked up a 10-0 major decision victory over Seth Harrington to finish 2-1 for the tournament. Mincey and Allen were the two Mavericks to finish an undefeated 3-0 on the day. Mincey remains undefeated on the season with a 12-0 record.

Minnesota State returns to action on Thursday, January 14 for its home opener as they take on MSU Moorhead. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
