Foot Mercato are reporting that Manchester United enquired about Olympique Lyonnais Houssem Aouar (24) before eventually moving to sign Bayern Munich’s Marcel Sabitzer (28).

Manchester United have been forced into the market to sign a midfielder following an injury to Christian Eriksen that is thought to rule the Danish international out for up to three months. Before making definitive steps to sign Sabitzer from Bayern Munich, the Red Devils had considered a move for Aouar.

The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the season, and Manchester United were prepared to pay to loan Aouar until the end of that contract. The Premier League side would have paid the player’s full salary during the spell. Whilst the tendency is currently that Sabitzer will join the Premier League club, a change of situation is still possible, and Aouar, who had looked set to leave Les Gones in the summer, could yet depart earlier.
