As reported by RMC, Kylian Mbappé impressed the Spanish-speaking world with his mastery of the Spanish language when talking to Movistar, a Spanish broadcaster, after PSG’s 1-0 win over Real Madrid on Tuesday evening.
Mbappé’s use of Spanish has been well-known for some time after he discussed learning English and Spanish with Thierry Henry last year and given the fact he’s close friends with the large Spanish-speaking contingent within the PSG squad. Mbappé had previously told Le Parisien that he has been taking weekly Spanish lessons since 2019 but that his level has been good since his Monaco academy days. Nevertheless, his comfort in speaking Spanish has been rarely seen in public.
As RMC point out, the Spanish press were quick to notice. AS wondered: ‘Why does he speak Castilian so well?’ while Marca were adamant: ‘He speaks in perfect Castilian’. Argentine outlet Olé, meanwhile, suggested that Mbappé speaks Spanish with an Argentine accent, likely due to the sizeable Argentine influence at PSG, not to mention that of his coach Mauricio Pochettino.
