Peter O’Mahony has signed a contract extension with Ireland and Munster, while Andy Farrell has named his 37-man Six Nations squad to face Italy, with Joey Carbery returning.

O’Mahony has signed a one-year extension to his IRFU contract that will run until the end of the 2023/24 season.

‘Hunger to learn’

The British and Irish Lions flanker has played 171 games for Munster, scoring 15 tries, and has won 91 caps for Ireland.

During his Test career, O’Mahony has three Six Nations titles, winning the tournament in 2014 and 2015, and added a Grand Slam in 2018 and a Triple Crown in 2022. He has also featured in two World Cups.

“The journey this Ireland squad has been on since the World Cup in Japan has been incredible to be a part of. There is a hunger to learn and compete and a great camaraderie in the group,” O’Mahony said on the confirmation of his extension.

“My ambition is to compete at a third World Cup and help this team achieve success over the coming weeks and months.”

Ireland squad update

Andy Farrell has named a 37-man squad to prepare for Ireland’s third Six Nations match on Saturday against Italy.

Joey Carbery, who starred for Munster at the weekend, returns to the squad as additional cover for captain Johnny Sexton.

Meanwhile, Cian Healy and Dan Sheehan have completed their individual hamstring rehab programmes and are back in contention for the matchday 23.

Having featured in the United Rugby Championship for their provinces this weekend, the likes of Caolin Blade, Gavin Coombes, Jordan Larmour, Jimmy O’Brien, Jamie Osborne, Cian Prendergast, Roman Salanoa and Jacob Stockdale have all returned to the squad.

Kieran Treadwell has been recalled following the injury to Tadhg Beirne, which has ruled him out of the remainder of the campaign. Joe McCarthy has also been ruled out with an ankle issue.

Keith Earls is unavailable this week due to a calf issue, while Jamison Gibson-Park, Robbie Henshaw and Tadhg Furlong will all continue their respective rehab programmes. Hooker Rob Herring continues his graduated return-to-play protocols.
