Drinking alcohol in India is categorised by various rules and regulations. While in some states it is totally forbidden to consume alcohol, other states have permissible age limits and consumption limits on the level of intoxication.

Driving under the influence of alcohol is a punishable offense. The legal limit of blood-alcohol content (BAC) or blood alcohol concentration is 0.03% or 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml in the bloodstream. If a person is found driving with a BAC content higher than this, then he or she can be booked under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which consists imprisonment up to six months or fine up to Rs 2,000 or both.
The latest incident has come to light that might question the credibility of breathalyzer devices that measure the BAC content in a person. A Hyderabad student named Syed Zaheeruddin Quardi was stopped over by traffic officials on August 25 for driving under the influence. At 11 pm, Quardi was asked to take the breathalyzer test which showed positive results regarding above the permissible limit BAC levels.
