The first openly gay congressman, Jean Wyllys said that he will not serve the new term despite getting re-elected following threats to his life and now he is mullilng to leave the country as well and stay abroad. Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), the party Wyllys belongs to, said that his seat in Brasilia will be given to another lawmaker who is also gay. The new lawmaker on his seat would be Rio councilman David Miranda, the husband of Pulitzer Prize-winning U.S. journalist Glenn Greenwald.

Wyllys expressed his concerns via an interview in a newspaper citing the high murder rates in the country which have gone worse ever since the election of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.
