As mentioned earlier, Alberto El Patron being stripped of the GFW World Heavyweight Championship was reportedly a decision made the company, not a request from Patron himself as he has been claiming. Dave Meltzer mentioned on Wrestling Observer Radio that Jim Cornette “buried” Patron during a promo when he made his return to GFW at the latest set of tapings. Cornette mentioned that GFW did in fact make the call to strip him of the title. Bruce Prichard also claimed during a his own in-ring segment that GFW had wished Patron the “best in his future endeavors,” a statement typically used when WWE parts ways with another wrestler. It is unclear if Patron’s departure from the company is legitimate or not as of now.
Patron may not be the only big star that GFW could be losing soon. In a series of spoilers for upcoming GFW Impact shows reported by Wrestling Inc., it appears that Bobby Lashley could be leaving wrestling to return to his MMA career. Bobby Lashley and his MMA team, American Top Team, were at the latest set of TV tapings, and Jeremy Borash did say that Lashley would be leaving pro wrestling soon. This does seem to mirror the current angle in WWE involving Brock Lesnar leaving the company to focus on an MMA career, but Lashley wanting to focus on MMA training has been rumored for nearly the entire year. Staged or not, it should become more clear as the weeks go on.
In other news, WWE is currently set in New York City for the weekend festivities surrounding SummerSlam. Yesterday, Gothamist reported a story about group of people protesting President Donald Trump’s recent actions towards addressing the incidents in Charlottesville, NC gathered around the Barclays Center. The protest was done in order to have WWE remove Trump from their Hall of Fame due to some of his controversial statements. Donald Trump has been friendly with the McMahon family for decades, he even appointed Linda McMahon as his Small Business Administrator after winning the 2016 US election. Donald Trump was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in Madison Square Garden back in 2013.
