John Cena is teaming up with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions for one of his next film roles.
Johnson announced on Instagram today that Cena will be playing the lead in “The Janson Directive,” which is adapted from an action-thriller novel from the late Robert Ludlum. Here’s how it’s described: “Former Navy SEAL and prisoner of war, Paul Janson, works as a corporate security consultant, but when an assignment to rescue a VIP goes wrong, he’s forced to go on the run.”
The movie is in partnership with Universal Pictures and Johnson had been originally slated to star in it prior to today’s announcement. Johnson and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions are among the executive producers listed for the film.
Ludlum also wrote the Jason Bourne series of books.
Cena’s most recent appearances on WWE television were his matches against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34 and Triple H at the Greatest Royal Rumble. He and Johnson have been going against each other at the box office in recent weeks, with Cena in the movie “Blockers” and Johnson in “Rampage.”
They headlined WrestleMania together twice, with Johnson defeating him in 2012 and Cena getting his win back in 2013.
