On January 2nd, it was confirmed that WWE Hall of Famer “Mean” Gene Okerlund had passed away at the age of 76. This is a very tragic death for wrestling fans as Okerlund served as the voice for several wrestling events throughout the decades. Numerous individuals have posted their tributes to Okerlund online and have said that he was one of the friendliest and most humble individuals in the history of the business. Meanwhile, WWE has been uploading tons of exclusive photos and videos of some the highlights of Okerlund’s career, and it seems incredibly likely that a tribute video for the legendary announcer by the company will air on Raw this Monday. NXT just honored “Mean” Gene during one of their recent shows.
NXT returned to Full Sail University to tape some upcoming episodes of the show. Before the shows went underway, WWE put some graphics for Okerlund on the stage. The fans in Orlando, Florida went silent as WWE held a 10-bell salute for Okerlund. Details on Gene’s death are still coming out, but the belief is that his health took a steep turn after he fell and injured his ribs in December. He was later admitted into a nursing home before he passed away a couple of days ago. As previously mentioned, several wrestlers have commented on Gene Okerlund’s passing on social media already, and it is clear that his peers thought very highly of him. A video of the salute has been uploaded on WWE’s official YouTube channel.
Impact Wrestling’s next pay-per-view is set to take place in just a few more days. For this event, Impact will be returning to where it all started in The Asylum in Nashville, Tennessee for an event called Homecoming. With only days left to go until the show, Impact has confirmed two new matches for the event. Sami Callihan will be facing The Mack in a grudge match while Allie & Su Yung will face the team of Jordynne Grace & Kiera Hogan. Homecoming is loaded with some intriguing matches and could prove to be a great show for Impact before the promotion moves to the Pursuit Channel next week. Homecoming will be airing on January 6th and it expected to feature Johnny Impact defending the Impact World Championship against Brian Cage in the main event.
