MOORHEAD, Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team competed in day one of the NCAA Super Region III tournament on Friday in the Alex Namzek Fieldhouse with Cole Hennen and Cortez Arredondo still alive in their respective brackets for SMSU.

Southwest Minnesota State finished the day in 14th place with 6.5 team points while No. 1 St. Cloud State led the way with 76.5 team points.

Taylor Curtis lost a 6-0 decision to Andrew McFall of Minnesota State in the first match of the day for SMSU. Curtis was then defeated by an 8-0 major decision in the first consolation round to Marcus Povlick.

Jordan Biehn lost by tech fall (15-0) in his first match of the day to Paul Selman at 133. Biehn then had a bye before losing a 10-0 major decision to Tate Barnhardt.

Zach Beaumaster faced the top ranked wrestler in the nation at 141, Nate Rodriguez, in his first match of the day, losing by fall at 2:34. Beaumaster then held a 2-0 lead over Derek Heil into the dying moments of the third period, but Heil was able to force overtime with a late takedown. Heil then won by sudden victory in the first overtime period to escape with a 4-2 win.

Cortez Arredondo won the first match of the day for an SMSU wrestler with a 7-5 sudden victory in overtime over Bailey Neises. Arredondo lost a 7-2 decision to Damian Penichet of Upper Iowa but rebounded by winning a 5-1 decision over Ben Stahlman. Arredondo remains in the 149 consolation bracket heading into day two.

Kegen Fingalsen dropped his first match of the day in a 14-3 major decision that went to Isaac Novacek of MSU Moorhead. Fingalsen then came back with an 8-5 decision over Steffon Fassett in the first round of wrestle-backs, but was then defeated by fall to Blake Perryman of Northern State in his next bout.

Jake Slocum lost by fall to Brock Wingbermuehle in 0:34 to begin his day. Slocum was then defeated by fall again, this time to Paul Michaelson in the first round of wrestle-backs.

Griffin Osing dropped a 6-0 decision to Clayton Jennissen of No. 1 St. Cloud State in his first bout of the day. Osing then came back with a 6-2 decision over Brandon Petit in the first consolation round but lost a 7-2 decision to Batchuluun Zulkhuu.

Cole Hennen lost his first match by a 5-2 decision to Nick Baumler of Upper Iowa but then came back with a dominant 16-0 win by tech fall over Jules Joseph. Hennen then secured his spot in day two with a 13-0 major decision over John Oss.

In the 285 weight class, Andrew Peterson was defeated by fall to Michael Lowman. Peterson then earned a 4-2 decision over Ben Melton in the first round of wrestle-backs. Peterson was then defeated by a 3-1 decision to Chris Zimmer as day one came to a close in the Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Both consolation and semi-final matches begin at 11 a.m., on Saturday morning to kick off day two of the NCAA Super III Regional Tournament. Cortez Arredondo will take on Cody Haugen of Minot State at 149 while Cole Hennen will face John Filipek to start the second day.
