St. Cloud State University wrestling (19-0, 8-0 NSIC) will head into next week’s NCAA Division II championships as the nation’s top-ranked Division II team. The Huskies gained the top spot in the final regular season NCAA DII Wrestling Coaches Association national poll.

SCSU scored 94 points in the poll, while Notre Dame (Ohio) was second with 90 points. California Baptist (67), McKendree (64) and Ashland (58) completed the top five in this week’s poll.

Individually, the Huskies had wrestlers ranked in all 10 weight classes in the national poll this week. The Huskies’ Brett Velasquez was ranked #3 at 125, while Adam Hedin made his poll debut at 133-pounds with a #12 ranking this week. At 141-pounds, Jarred Oftedahl was ranked #3 and James Pleski held on to his #1 national ranking in the 149-pound weight division.

At 157-pounds, SCSU’s Larry Bomstad will enter the NCAA finals ranked #10 and Devin FitzPatrick was ranked #6 at 165 for SCSU. At 174-pounds, Kolton Eischens continues to impress this season with a #6 ranking and teammate Tyree Overton is ranked #6 in the 184-pound bracket this season. Senior Vince Dietz will finish off his collegiate career with a #3 national rank at 197-pounds and teammate Lawrence Phillips has received a #9 ranking at 285-pounds.

Of note, Phillips ranks second in the most recent NCAA DII rankings for most falls at 14 (in a time of 27:17) and Oftedahl ranks 9th with nine falls (20:00). Dietz ranks 9th in the NCAA Division II’s most dominant wrestler ranking with a 3.97 team points average.

The Huskies will open the 2018 NCAA Division II championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 9-10.
