The match in Ligue 1 that took place between Nantes vs PSG took a bizarre twist as the referee was at the centre of a controversial incident. During injury time Paris Saint-Germain was looking to score another goal to put themselves two goals to nil up and seal the result when the reefer took out Nate defender Diego Carlos. It happen when the defender was running back to help his team defend when the referee crossed his path which resulted in the player going down.

The referee was Tony Chapron from France and when the two collided due to their limbs getting tangled up when he crossed paths, both players ended up on the ground. It was Chapron who feel first which resulted in him kicking Carlos when he rolled on the floor from the incident.

It is not the first time that a player and referee have collided to bring each other down. What makes this incident so bizarre though is that the referee sent off the player he brought down. Carlos was already on a yellow card for a bad challenge that took place in the game’s first half which was a good call but his reaction to being sent off for the collision was of complete astonishment and rightly so.

After the games, Waldemar Kita, the Chairman of Nantes, called for the referee to be banned for at least six months after the shocking decision. He even when further to suggest that the referee may have done it on purpose but refused to want to believe that.

There has been no confirmation as to why the referee decided to send off Carlos who he kicked during the game. It is believed that he received the yellow card for something that he said after the referee had brought him down.

The win over Nantes means that PSG now has an 11 point advantage over the other teams in Ligue 1. With over half the games played and 18 remaining, they are the bookie’s hot favorites to win the title and rightly so. They are currently on a 7 game winning streak in all competitions and with Neymar due to come back in the team once recovered from injury, you would be crazy to bet against them.

It looks like Claudio Ranieri will not be able to create another miracle like he did at Leicester City when they won the EPL title back in 2016. The Nantes manager though has done a remarkable job and even though they lost the game against PSG they still sit in 5th place in Ligue 1. They are currently only eight points from the fourth place which Marseille currency occupy. While Nantes might not win the league they are a great outside bet to qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season.
