L’Équipe report that Ligue 1 side Rennes have made an initial approach for 20-year-old versatile French defender Mohamed Simakan, as they continue to search for someone who can play on the right side of central defence.

RCSA will not do business for less than €15m – SRFC Sporting Director Florian Maurice knows the player well, having scouted him thoroughly when he was Head of Recruitment at Lyon. Simakan will want to know more detail on how Julien Stéphan would intend to use him – would he be a guaranteed starter at right centre-back ahead of Damien Da Silva? Would he rotate with the older more experienced Ligue 1 veteran?

Bayer Leverkusen have also recently made contact for Simakan and can easily pay the asking price without thinking about it too much following the €80m sale of Kai Havertz. If he were to move there, he would have to be convinced of regularly playing as a right-sided central defender in a back three, something that he has limited exposure to. AS Monaco are no longer interested after deciding to retain Djibril Sidibé at right-back and signing Axel Disasi at right-sided central defender – Simakan can of course play in both positions.

However, Atalanta and AC Milan continue to circle, but are waiting to have the appropriate funds to make a move.
